Meet Stephen Tyler: The Utility Experience Behind EDGE®
When you spend decades working inside the electric utility industry, you develop a different perspective on grid technology.
You know that a good idea has to do more than look promising on paper. It has to work within real utility systems, fit established operational practices, earn the trust of engineering teams, and ultimately help solve problems that matter to customers.
That perspective has shaped Stephen Tyler’s career and his work leading DVI Grid Solutions.

Steve has more than 30 years of experience in the electric utility industry, with a career spanning engineering, analytics, leadership, and grid optimization. Today, as Director of DVI Grid Solutions, he leads the team behind EDGE®, helping utilities address challenges around affordability, capacity, reliability, and grid modernization without relying solely on new infrastructure or customer programs.
A Career Built Around Solving Complex Problems
Steve began his career with Dominion in 1985, holding engineering and leadership roles across Distribution Planning, Distribution Standards, and Substation Engineering.
From 2001 to 2009, Steve took his analytical and technical problem-solving skills into an entirely different industry, joining Capital One Financial to tackle the complex challenge of identity fraud. While a departure from his previous work, the role drew on many of the same strengths. Steve led a team of analysts developing defenses against increasingly sophisticated fraud threats.
He returned to Dominion in 2009 and joined DVI Grid Solutions in 2011, bringing together decades of utility experience with a broader perspective on analytics, technology, and risk.
Since then, Steve has played a central role in advancing DVI’s approach to Advanced Voltage Optimization and has led the DVI engineering team for more than 15 years.
Helping Shape the Technology Behind EDGE®
DVI’s EDGE® platform was built from firsthand utility experience, and Steve has been closely involved in its evolution.
DVI Grid Solutions holds more than 28 patents related to Advanced Voltage Optimization, and Steve is named as an inventor on more than 20 of them.
That work reflects one of the ideas at the core of EDGE®: utilities can often unlock more value from the infrastructure and data they already have.
Rather than treating voltage optimization as a theoretical exercise, EDGE® was developed around real-world utility operations, using grid data and existing distribution assets to help utilities improve efficiency, manage peak demand, increase capacity, and support a changing grid.
Built by a Utility, for Utilities
For Steve, that utility perspective remains one of DVI’s biggest strengths.
The team understands the realities utilities operate within because many of those same challenges shaped the development of EDGE® in the first place.
Today, Steve continues to work with utilities evaluating how Advanced Voltage Optimization can support their operational and strategic goals, while guiding the continued evolution of the EDGE® platform.
Steve holds a BSEE from Virginia Tech and an MBA from the University of Richmond.
